Boldly Going Nowhere
Network: Fox
Stars: Ben Koldyke, Tony Hale (“Chuck,” “Arrested Development”), David Hornsby ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia”)
The pitch: The brain trust behind "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia” presents this comedy about the less-than-exciting lives of starship crew and their un-Kirk-like captain. Though “Boldly” is supposedly based on an original idea, it’s basically a clone of short-lived BBC series, “Hyperdrive,” starring Nick Frost (“Sean of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”) as the captain.
Why we think they didn’t pick it up: Sure, “Boldly” probably would have been funny, but following the success of the “Star Trek” movie, a series might have played like an overlong “SNL” parody. The all-too-similar “Hyperdrive” was widely regarded as a failure in the U.K., mostly by kooky Brits who think “Red Dwarf” is comedic gold. We think “Hyperdrive” is well worth patiently awaiting a domestic DVD release that may never actually occur.
