Regal Winter Park Village 20 has its fair share of nearby grub shacks, but I humbly suggest you cross over to the Kmart side of 17-92 for El Potro. The old-school Mexican restaurant chain has some great cheap lunch deals that, if you're catching a movie, can take the edge off the cost of heading to the multiplex.
Cheap seats: I stopped in just past noon to take advantage of the Monday-Saturday lunch menu and could hear someone chopping fresh vegetables in the kitchen (always a good sign). Then came the free chips with a fresh, smooth salsa (always a better sign ). Mexican restaurants that charge for chips and salsa should be avoided like a Chinese take-out that charges for fortune cookies.
Cheap Treats: The best deal for under $5 is the Speedy Gonzales lunch plate. For $4.79 you get a taco, an enchilada and either rice or refried beans. The beef is ground so fine that it's a little dry, but that's why you have the cheese and sauce, isn't it? If you must have both beans and rice, you can get them with a single taco or enchilada for $4.19. I say, "Splurge for the Speedy."
The mushroom quesadilla ($2.79) is just about perfect. Folded over, the tortilla is crispy on the outside and filled thick with grilled shrooms and gooey white cheese. I was already over my $5 spending limit so I had to skip dessert, but next time, I'll be back for the $3.99 banana chimichanga. Mmmmm -- whipped cream, honey, cinnamon, deep-fried banana .
Cheap Gas: El Potro is Spanish for "The Stallion," and there's a big painting of a horse hanging inside. On the opposite wall is a painting of the restaurant itself, a painting made by one of El Potro's regular customers. Now that's taco love.
