Steak & Salad

The Down Low: Forget the poor man’s buffet images that might come to mind when reading the name Steak & Salad, because this charming family-run sit-down restaurant just a skip from Virginia on Mills serves delicious Mediterranean-style meals at bargain prices.

The Dish: Given the name, obviously steak and salad choices abound on the menu, but there’s also plenty of sandwiches, seafood, soup, pizzas, appetizers and sides to consider as well.

The calamari ($5.99) appetizer was superb. Just a quick look as our friendly waiter set it down was enough to see it was perfectly fried, crispy yet tender. Its taste didn’t disappoint and the marinara sauce was just as good.

Not being a red meat eater or in the mood for salad, I ordered an excellent Mediterranean pizza ($5.99), an ample-sized personal pie with fresh artichoke, feta crumb, tomato, and black olives. At first bite, I was surprised by the tanginess of the pizza sauce, but with each successive bite I loved it more and more.

I also tried some mouth-watering grilled salmon from one of my guest’s mixed grill ($13.99) plate. He chose the tips and salmon, the other options being chicken or shrimp. A four ounce small serving of salmon runs $7.99 and are served with a side salad, a large dinner roll, and a choice of mashed potato, rice or baked potato. My guest found the steak to be wonderful and loved the salmon as much as me.

Another of my guests found delight in a shrimp skewer ($7.99), its grilled shrimp impeccably cooked and market fresh.

The Vibe/The Digs: Steak & Salad is a cozy, classy place with a cool, little bar and a thoroughly inviting outdoor patio. It reminded me of a little Italian eatery with its brick walls, cool colors and Mediterranean artwork. Sadly, there were no other diners during our visit for an extremely early dinner before the Magic laid waist to the Cavs in game 6. Hopefully folks arrived later to watch the game with our kind hosts who were also looking forward to the Magic victory.

The Damage: Unless you’re looking for a large, fancy steak, it seems difficult to spend a lot of money at Steak & Salad. Soft drinks are $1, iced tea only $1.50 (and the fresh teas to go were a really nice touch). The full menu and all of its reasonable and perhaps too-low prices can be found online.

The Bottom Line: Steak & Salad serves up delicious meals cooked with care and finesse for rock bottom prices in a charming, cool setting. They’re closed Sundays, but they open for lunch every other day at 11 a.m., closing at 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
