FOOD AND DRINKS: A whole new way to celebrate

During my 19th annual get-together with my mother’s side of the family for Passover, the topic of off-limit foods and drinks came up. Not surprisingly, none of us really knew what was okay to eat and what wasn’t (we don’t follow all of the rules by the book).

Our annual “feast without yeast” is more than just the removal of all bread from the house. According to MyJewishLearning.com, “The basic rule is that any product that is fermented or can cause fermentation may not be eaten, including five grains: wheat, rye, barley, oats, and spelt. Any food or drink that is made from one of these grains or that contains one of these grains, even in very small quantity, is [not allowed]”.

The Orthodox Jews are more strict with more restrictions, but my family’s idea of Passover is more a day of light tradition and a miniature reunion.  Like many Jewish holidays, this one included drinking. I still get the privilege of sitting at the kid’s table, so Welch’s was my personal choice, but upon snooping in my uncle’s kitchen, I found something that humored me: Jewish beer. Here’s a list of a few that may not be around on this current holiday but could easily be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what religion.
