Metromix's Joshua Woodman is in search of the mildly famous and seriously outrageous, this week he's caught the scent of '80s boy band New Kids on the Block.
Jan. 15
4 p.m.: Rumor has it that New Kids on the Block (NKOTB) will be at
The Beacon in Thornton Park at 10 p.m.
4:01 p.m.: Make plans to be at The Beacon at 10 p.m.
10:01 p.m.: At The Beacon, no sign of any boy bands or
former members of one.
10:18 p.m.: Still no sign, though its been years since I’ve
seen a new picture of any of them, so the group of "Queer Eye" makeovers at the
big table inside could be them.
10:20 p.m.: New Sources “Piper” and “Michele” (I think they
were too weirded out by me to give me their real names) say NKOTB were at the
Blue Martini last night and that the guys are in Orlando working with a “Fritz”
to produce their come-back album.
11:18 p.m.: Still no sign of NKOTB but DJ Scorpio is
spinning and the sadly sparse crowd at The Beacon confuses me since it’s ladies
night. Who doesn’t like free drinks? I worry about Orlando sometimes, we just don’t know a good
thing when we see it.
11:26 p.m.: After a phone call to a source close to the New Kids, we head to Vintage
where they are said to have been spotted with Chris Kirkpatrick of *N Sync fame
(a boy band support group meeting maybe?)
11:49 p.m.: Enter a really hopping Vintage where music is loud and booty dancing is plenty.
There is some type of college football player from Michigan upstairs, but that’s NOT who we
came to find! Still no New Kids. My oh-so-reliable source confirms that they
should be arriving by 12:30.
Midnight: Chris Kirkpatrick appears, he is followed and
surrounded by groupies and I can’t get to him yet. Rumors abound that NKOTB are
filming a reality show with VH1 and will be here in 15 minutes.
12:08 a.m.: Talked to Chris K. who checks his wicked cool phone and confirms that all of the
New Kids (minus Danny Wood) should be at the club soon. I find it odd that Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy
Back” has played two times in the past hour in different re-mixes but I do not
make mention of this to Chris.
12:22 a.m.: Aaron Wright, owner of BackBooth, is partying at Vintage. I wonder if he is
looking for the New Kids too? He assures
me he is not, but I don’t believe him.
12:30 a.m.: I have work in the morning and cannot wait out the New Kids. But I imagine it
would have looked something like the picture to the right if I had. New Kids: I know
