Catalepsy shocks the genre

What is considered the “hardcore” scene isn’t for everyone; for those who have the guts to appreciate this rebel genre need to know the difference between mediocrity and influential musicians. On Nov. 12 at the Social, UK grindcore band Bring Me the Horizon continued their U.S. tour, stopping in the city for a day at Universal Studios and enjoying the Florida heat.

The real intensity would be one of their opening bands, Catalepsy. The combination of clean-cut hardcore instrumentals, solid breakdowns and spectrum of sound from vocalists Josh Anderson and Rob Conover amount to a sound that was once considered replaced by disappointing mediocrity.

The band formed in 2004 from the aspirations of member Rob Walden. After making a name for themselves at local Florida shows, in 2007 Catalepsy signed with Stillborn Records with the help of Jamey Jasta. From there, they recorded their first EP, titled “Godless”. Touring began for the album “Iniquity”, which released on May 13 of 2008 with bands such as Hatebreed, Emmure, Agnostic Front and God Forbid.

Members include the aforementioned Anderson, Conover, Walden, Ben Sutton, Daniel Schwartz and John Stephan. Being local wasn’t in the plan for Catalepsy; they are currently featured on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball and have a music video on FuseTV.

By 2009, the band hopes to tour more of the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2009, and with a performance like the one at The Social, the potential between the six members are sure to bring their fame higher on the charts. Songs from “Iniquity” include “Punishment”, “11:16” and “Whispers”. Lyrics focus on the darker variety of life, an instrumentally dynamic compilation that encompasses what the definition of this genre should be, but without the haphazard convention.

“Iniquity" is available for purchase on iTunes and any other major CD carrier. For more information and to hear the brutal sounds of Catalepsy, visit their Myspace at www.myspace.com/catalepsy.
