Big question: How much does this doc add to understanding a hot-button topic that invokes passionate responses on both sides?
Catch it: This is a little movie that packs a big emotional punch. Director Dan Karslake impressively captures conflicted feelings of faith and family in his subjects, crafting a film that doesn’t ignore the darker side of the story but remains steadfastly positive and uplifting. There’s also a gentle plea for tolerance toward the intolerant, a savvy counter-attack to the divisiveness that tends to permeate the issue.
Skip it: Everything other than the interviewees’ personal stories plays a little too routine. The visual style is about as distinctive as the average cable news doc, an unnecessary short cartoon explaining the scientific background on homosexuality disrupts the momentum and the investigation into Biblical verses on the subject winds up muddled and unconvincing.
Bottom line: “For the Bible Tells Me So” will likely find itself preaching to the converted, but its moving true stories are powerful enough to affect anyone open to listening.
Bonus: You just might walk out of the movie debating the word “abomination.” How many Hollywood blockbusters can claim that?
