MOVIE: 'Lymelife' at Florida Film Festival
Got back earlier from Enzian for the screening of "Lymelife," a slice-of-suburban-life tale starring Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), Jill Hennessy ("Crossing Jordan"), Timothy Hutton ("Leverage") and Cynthia Nixon ("Sex and the City").
The film tells the story of the emotional fallout when two families are fragmented by lies and circumstances. Alec Baldwin stars as Mickey Bartlett, a controlling husband and somewhat-absent father obsessed with his real estate venture. Jill Hennessy plays his wife who longs for their simpler life back in Queens.
Set in the late '70s, the film is told through the eyes of their teenage son Scott (Rory Culkin), who copes with his mother's hysteria over Lyme disease and his longtime crush on his neighbor Adrianna (Emma Roberts). Adrianna is dealing with her own parents in turmoil — a father (Hutton) ill from Lyme disease who has checked out of his life and family and an unsympathetic, neurotic mother (Nixon).
There's a lot going on in this movie that somehow manages to work without overburdening the film. The film doesn't tidy up everything by the end, but it doesn't need to either. Through Scott we see his struggle at first love and the emotional descent of his family; it's a gripping tale of American life that will disarm you with its unexpected humor one moment then punch you in the gut with its rawness the next.
You can catch the spotlight film at the following showings at the Florida Film Festival. Tickets are on sale now.
