MOVIE: 'Alien Trespass' at the Florida Film Festival
Campy, trippy, cheesy, silly. And I mean that all in a good way. I'm amused by the unexpected charm of this '50s send-up of space fiction that spoofs the Golden Age of Sci-Fi. Meteors, spaceships and spacemen, body snatchers, absurdly named weapons, and one-eyed monsters, it's all there.
The cast is ripe with stereotypical characters — the bombshell, the innocently flirty waitress, the cranky cop, the misunderstood visitor from another planet — but the cast play their parts with an all-knowing intention of being funny without trying to be.
As Ted, Eric McCormack ("Will & Grace") plays the nerdy scientist who is married to a Marilynesque bombshell (Jody Thompson). When a meteor crash interrupts their anniversary, Ted sneaks off in the middle of the night to investigate. After being bodysnatched by an alien marshall, he becomes Urp, who sets off to find the one-eyed monster before it devours everyone on Earth. Along the way Urp gets help from a diner waitress, Tammy (Jenni Baird), who believes in his mission to save mankind.
If you've appreciated any of the late '50s films such as "The Blob" or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" for its, um, entertainment value (?), then you'll enjoy this well-crafted film directed by R.W. Goodwin ("The X-Files"). It's a trip worth taking.
