EDU: Gettin' your nerd on, beer in hand
Science. That word will either excite or repulse you, since, despite what they say, opinions on science have no shades of gray. Why is science off-putting to some people? This is something I have wondered for a while (because I'm a nerd, and I think about these things), and though it's easy to fall back on the "Science is hard" excuse, I think it has more to do with people feeling a bit pushed around by science. There is no room for opinion when dealing with science - just the facts as determined by how things react with other things (for example, when things go kaboom) and through discrete measurements of things (for example, when people go *yawn*).
But just because you can't make science what you want it to be doesn't mean that you can't get fantastic ideas about what you can do with it. Enter Café Scientifique, where you get to sit down with an expert, sip on a beer, munch on some food, and basically spitball with a brainiac for an hour about the topic at hand. And it's okay if you know nothing about the topic at hand - that's kind of the point of the whole thing.
Sound interesting? The Café convenes every first Wednesday of the month at Taste in College Park. This month's topic is Energy, as presented by a dude named Dr. Michael Hampton, who's going to teach all you need to know about the future of hydrogen as a fuel source? Want to be ahead of the curve? Want to outsmart even your smartiest of smartypants friends? Then you should go to this little shindig this Wednesday, November 4th at 7 p.m., grab a tasty treat at Taste, and fill your brain with glorious knowledge (and your belly with heavenly beer).
