Inside: Voyage

Inside: Voyage

Who likes lesbian art with their dance beats? Raise your hands, wait no - put your hands in the air. Voyage Nightclub, taking the place of Blue Room at 17 W. Pine St. in downtown Orlando serves up that combo for you. Fortunately, that’s not the only gimmick they have to offer – opposite-themed rooms, creative karaoke, and potent drinks help keep Voyage from being just another downtown nightclub.

Décor: Before you even think of entering, know that a $10 cover is pretty typical for guys, but girls keeping their eyes on the website can easily slip through with cash intact. Hardwood floors and inviting couches are the most impressive touch in the main, blue-tinted room, which allows it to be open but littered with secluded spots at the same time. The perimeter is peppered with VIP cubby holes that seat two to four, as well as a main VIP section for larger groups. If you have cyanophobia (fear of the color blue), head beneath the painting of the naked woman spreading her legs down to the multi-level red room. With its lounge aesthetics and quieter sound system, Voyage’s red room is focused less on the club and more on the drinking.

The Bar: To accommodate the frequent nightly specials, there are three main bars - one in the blue room, and two in the red. The staff aren’t really eager to serve quickly, but you’ll soon forget that when your $6 mixed drink comes back three-quarters full of liquor. In fact, that kind of quality makes you forget about the $6 price tag as well. Wednesdays are Academia nights, which somehow translates to “show off your hot body night.” Celebrating beauty and not brains gets you $15 unlimited you-call-its. Thursdays are poker nights, with $5 martinis and a chance to win a seat at the World Poker Tournament. Fridays start off with happy hour two-for-one drinks and finish the night with $130 you-call-it bottles and free drinks for the ladies until midnight. Saturdays find Voyage hosting reggaeton DJ’s and drink specials that aren’t described and might not even exist if your bartender hasn’t been made aware of them.

Sounds: A rotating catalog of DJ’s bring hip hop, Top 40, reggaeton, and more to Voyage, but you may not find out what’s actually playing until you show up, due to frequently changing nightly schedules. Voyage is also host to Rockstar Karaoke on Sunday nights, where you get a chance to hone your rocking chops (and humiliate yourself) in front of a live band.

Crowd: Most of the crowd seems to be young professionals attracted to the red room’s loungey atmosphere, leaving the blue room to the smaller group of people with dancing fever.

Bottom Line: Voyage is just different enough to stand out against the many downtown nightclubs, but needs to nail down a firm schedule of themed nights to get a dedicated crowd.
