Inside: Revolution

Just as the lights seemed to dim on gay bars in Orlando a new family of them started popping up all over the place just in time to keep the gay fun rolling. Taking over where Southern Nights left off at 375 S. Bumby Ave. stands the aptly named Revolution Nightclub, and it takes its role seriously. You can drink, dance, or lounge and you don’t even have to be gay to do so.

Décor: On a busy night the parking lot fills up quickly, but there’s plenty of street space around the neighborhood. Covers vary but seem to stay beneath $10. Once you get in you’d do well to find some bearings, because Revolution is labyrinthine and diverse in its offerings. The main drinking spot is the Hydrate Video Bar, which gets its name from the multiple televisions littering the walls. Several comfy-looking VIP booths line the wall behind the bar, while a room just opposite that surprisingly sports a couple pool tables. Continuing with naming the bars inside the bar, there’s the Majestic Theater & Lounge, where live entertainment shows are performed nightly (to keep the gay up to appropriate levels). Continuing outside is the patio (which has no name – it’s just the patio), a huge but comfortable spot with fountains and some seating. The indoor dance floor is modestly sized, but that just helps it look more packed when it’s not (though it usually is).

The Bar: The drink selections are pretty standard club fare like shots and martinis, but Revolution often throws in a good special to keep wallets (and purses) happy. Mondays are Latin House & Hospitality nights, with no cover before 10 p.m. (and unlike many other clubs around town, people actually show up early to Revolution), $3 cuba libres, $3 Bacardi mojitos, and $4 you-call-its (for service industry folks only); Tuesdays throw alliteration to the wind with Hunter’s Hunt for the Hot and Hung nights, with local diva Danielle Hunter hosting and $2 sex on the beach shots and $3 Bud and Bud Lights available until midnight; Resurrection Wednesdays have free wells from 10-11 p.m. and $5 Stoli martinis all night; Thursdays are college nights with $3 Buds and $5 Jager bombs all night; Finally Fridays have no cover until 11 p.m. and $3 Buds and $5 Stoli martinis all night; Saturdays are Unity nights, when gay men and women are encouraged to party together, bolstered by $5 Stoli martinis, $5 Jager bombs, and $3 Buds and Miller Lite; Sundays are “caffeinated” with long island iced tea specials every hour and free barbecue. Regular mixed drinks run $5, and are about average on the pour.

Sounds: DJ Miik regularly spins, but guest DJ’s often show up to play popular house music.

Crowd: While there’s representation from all ages, Revolution is predominantly young. And gay.

Tip: The bartenders are all extremely friendly, so straight guys who are comfortable with their sexuality should totally take advantage of this and entice a more generous pour.
