Inside: Orlando Laugh House

Has the recent dearth of comedy clubs in Orlando left you… chuckleless? Perhaps you don’t even have a reason to smile anymore. With the loss of the well-established Orlando Improv in 2007, your options to see headlining comedians slimmed down significantly. With the opening of the new Orlando Laugh House at 4270 Aloma Ave. in the Winter Park Palms Shopping Plaza you still probably won’t get the most famous of acts (at least until the Laugh House becomes a little more well-known) but at least you get some pretty good drink prices and an atmosphere that makes you say “Yeah, I could laugh here.”

Décor: Finding the strip mall housing the Laugh House is a little daunting along the darkend stretch of Aloma Avenue, but the big, guffawing microphone on the sign gives the place away. Inside it’s laid out like a well-lit lounge with small tables and comfy booths taking up most of the space and stools around the medium-sized bar filling out the rest. An elevated stage near the door hosts enough space for a full band or a lone comedian, with just enough room left over for all the fruit you’ve thrown at the acts (people still do that, right?).

The Bar: Like any good comedy club, the Laugh House sports a full bar in addition to a wide variety of brews. But just because the selection’s kind of fancy doesn’t mean they’re going to pilfer your not so fancy wallet. A wells mixer costs a mere $4 for fairly hefty pour, which is refreshing even this far outside of downtown. The only downside is that all drinks succumb to the food tax that rules the joint, meaning that all that change you’ve been hoarding to pay for gas will go to the booze. Showing some hometown pride, the Laugh House also stocks some Orlando Brewery beer on tap, coming in at a typical $4 a glass. Also on tap are the regular suspects: Bud, Bud Light, Miller Lite, and Amber Bock. The available bottles show a little more creativity, with Sam Adams, Dogfish Head, and some of the artisan varieties of Michelob. If it still seems like you can’t afford as much as you’ll need to laugh at the night’s act, then get to the Laugh House between 4-7 p.m. every day for the Happy Hour, where everything is two-for-one. There’s also Ladies Night on Tuesday, where the fairer laughers drink wells, drafts, and wine for free from 9 p.m. until midnight, and get to enjoy some good ol’ karaoke.

Service: All the lady servers are dressed in button-down white shirts and black slacks, which lends a sort of manly Tom & Jerry’s feel to the Laugh House. Regardless, they’re friendly and prompt.

Sounds: Hopefully you’ll hear nothing but the hearty guffaws of happy patrons. Barring that there may be a live band to keep things active. If not that, then join in with heckling the sad sack comedian on stage – it builds their character.

Crowd: Those who like a good laugh or a cheap stiff drink will fit in just fine, but the Laugh House is a must for those who support local comedy in this town.
