Inside: 11/12 Lounge

Lounges in Orlando, as a rule, tend to be the trendiest (and often douchebagiest) extensions of ourselves, and as a consequence they’re all glitter and little substance, which no one wants to see in themselves. So it’s only fun to pretend to be stylish when the lounge is pulling the same charade. 11/12 Lounge at 843 Lee Road in Winter Park is styling and fancy, but you can tell that some of the grime of the former occupant, that skeezy pool hall Duke’s, remains, making the pretend fantasy of being fabulous all the more enjoyable.

Décor: With 12,000 square feet to play with, 11/12 went with an open arrangement, giving you a view of almost every nook and cranny, rather than the labyrinthine approach other local lounges take. Despite the VIP booths lined up near the front, there are still stools lining the bar, giving the plebeians a chance to take a load off. An extraordinarily large dance floor engulfs the rest of the space, butting up to a stage in back, where jazz and other musicians are expected to pump some variety into the place. Outside is a sizeable patio for smokers, but there is no television and no speaker, meaning it’s just another smokers’ primate cage. The bathrooms are fairly clean, but someone dumped a bucket of rocks into the sinks, either for fancy effect or to cover a gnarly stain.

The Bar: With beer bottle selections like Bud, Bud Light, Miller Lite, and Michelob (all $4), you know that this is a liquor bar. Tall bottles pack the forty foot behemoth, which may cause you to ask “Why is there an ungodly amount of liquor staring at me?” It all has to do with the name of the place (you’ve been waiting for this, haven’t you?): 11/12 means that between the hours of 11 p.m. and midnight everyone gets free cocktails, no matter how fast you pound ‘em back. The only outcome of this will either be a bankrupt bar or destroyed livers, so get your affairs in order and take advantage of it now.

Cover is typically $10 for guys and free for ladies, except at happy hour, which is from 4-7 p.m. Happy hour specials include two-for-one Captain Morgan and Bacardi drinks (which they’ll happily pour into one glass for you) for $6, and two-for-one wines, of which there’s a fairly decent selection.

Sounds: Top 40 and other hits play out of the speakers while, strangely, some other artist’s music video plays the screens. The many flatscreen TVs and projection screens occasionally broadcast a sports game or fight, so be prepared for hoots and hollers to fill your ears as well.

Crowd: Like many lounges, 11/12 has a dress code designed to class up the joint (no sandals, boots, baggy clothes, jerseys, and the like, and ladies must be sex-ay), but unlike many lounges they stick to their guns and enforce it, so you probably don’t want to test them.
