NIGHTLIFE: Gator game viewing parties

I know everyone wants to get in on the Gator Fever tonight in honor of UF playing in the BCS National Championship game at 8 p.m., but some of these places around town throwing parties for the game make no sense to me! Then again, I‘m seeing people that have never even mentioned the Gators before that have been doing the Gator Chomp the last couple of days. Everyone is allowed their 15 minutes of poser fun I guess.

Cityfish Restaurant? Really? How does a seafood restaurant in Thornton Park translate into college football viewing hangout? There’s going to be specials on oysters and buffalo chicken wings with $2 Miller Lite drafts. Just make sure to put your napkin on your lap before “chomping” on some wings (you know I had to throw that one in there).

Here’s another doozie: The Enzian. Yes, our little independent movie house in Maitland is actually throwing a Gator viewing party tonight. Well let’s just throw the pigskin right into the movie screen shall we? Where’s our culture folks? Not at the Enzian tonight, that’s for sure. There’s even tailgating at Eden Bar at 5 p.m. What is the world coming to?

Okay, so I can kind of understand Brix in downtown Orlando throwing a viewing party. If you told me the same thing six months ago I would have thought you had lost your mind since the bar was primarily a wine bar. Could you imagine chomping on pita bites and hummus (I can’t stop) and sipping on Chardonnay while watching the big game? No way! The new location on Central resembles more of a sports bar now, so we’ll let it slide. UF alums get 10 percent off of their entire check to boot.

Some other places throwing parties are a bit more understandable like O’Boys in Winter Park, Sanford Ale House in Sanford and Broadway Pizza in Kissimmee. They all offer that 10 percent off discount as well.

As for me, I’ll be watching the game on my 46-inch flat screen! Yeah, I went to UCF, but I’m willing to jump on any bandwagon that allows me to drink beer and eat wings on a school night. Go Gators!
