Benefit far from a drag

Local female-impersonator Roxxxy has become a force in this town. She recently won Miss Metropolitan Continental Plus 2008, a highly respected national female impersonation pageant, and is preparing for a trip to Chicago to compete in Miss Continental Plus to represent Orlando.

So what’s the problem?

Getting to the competition won’t be low-priced. When you consider the hair, makeup and hotel for Roxxxy and her backup dancers, not to mention the plane tickets, this competition is not one that will come cheap.

Solution?

Let’s have a benefit show to raise her some money. Last Sunday, Pulse nightclub on 1912 S. Orange Ave. in Orlando held a benefit show for Miss Roxxxy in all of her glory.

The idea was to round up some of the biggest female-impersonation names in the area, along with some of the lesser-known ones, to raise the money to get Roxxxy to Chi-Town.

The show ran from 9-11 p.m. and with about 12-15 performers the show was expected to “drag” on shall we say. Pulse and Roxxxy were ready though, everything went seemingly according to plan. The show was full of glitz, glamour, rhinestones, and a whole lot of foundation as the money just kept flowing in by the minute.

A silver bowl was placed next to the stage for the drag queens to drop the donations they received when their performance was done. The bowl had to be emptied a good six or seven times and when the night came to a halt the floor was literally covered in money as people were at this point screaming their heads off and throwing money at Roxxxy.

When asked what winning the title of Miss Continental Plus would mean to her she answered “It would mean the world to me I’ve dreamed about it for a long time and can’t wait to one day be a part of the Continental sisterhood!”

With a performance stretch of over five years in this town, Roxxxy has come a long way with her performances and is really creating a name for herself. Her fan base has instantly grown before her eyes and it was clearly seen the night of the benefit.

Ask anyone in the gay community and they will tell you, 9 p.m. is way too early to be at a club. But even on a Sunday, Roxxxy was able to fill the house with people excited and willing to help her with her cause.

The pageant will take place in March and will be here before we know it. Roxxxy ended the night thanking everyone from the bottom of her heart before she headed off to the after-party at Revolution off of Bumby Avenue in Orlando, where every armband from Pulse got Roxxxy another donation on behalf of Danielle Hunter and the Revolution family.

Roxxxy can be seen at Pulse on Wednesday and Thursday nights and at Revolution on Sunday nights, where you can donate to her potentially winning the title of Miss Continental Plus 2008.
